ELMORE JUDD: Tron Song

UK release date 02.07.2007

The accompanying press release describes this offbeat song as ‘electronic soul,’ though listening to Judd’s aloof, mannered and somewhat anaemic vocals floating over a robotic backing track it’s hard to agree.

That doesn’t mean to say, though, that ‘Tron Song’ is totally bereft of redeeming qualities: the sparse, lo-fi groove with its muffled slapped bass and electric percussion is reminiscent of something Prince might have recorded circa the ‘1999’ album back in 1982.The track is the first single (available both as a vinyl 45 and a download) extracted from Judd’s forthcoming debut long player, ‘Insect Funk,’ which is due in the autumn, though on this evidence, I don’t think many B&S readers will be overly excited by the prospect.
